Analysis: Why did Micron buy Numonyx?: "Micron Technology Inc.'s acquisition of NOR flash leader Numonyx Holdings B.V. this week is part of an ongoing diversification strategy by the U.S. memory maker.

  1. During a conference call, Micron was bullish about the deal. The U.S. company did not discuss the integration process. But clearly, Micron will most likely cut Numonyx' overhead and its headcount. ''We think this deal will make us stronger,'' declared Steve Appleton, chairman and CEO of Micron, during the conference call.

On the other hand, how much investment will Micron want to put into a new company, new technology, and new manufacturing? I think they will keep PCM alive but on a slow track in hopes that the market will develop. Although there are better technologies than PCM, Micron may be forced to continue with PCM instead of RRAM or CMOx since the incumbent 'PCM' was inherited,'' he said. CMOx is a next-generation memory technology being pushed by Unity Semiconductor Corp.
